Chapter 12
I won’t get to heaven
And I don’t fit in a monastery
They know ’cause all men are the same
Aren’t they?
(Monastery, Gardiner/Vaughan)
Michael
The sound of intense drumming was coming from the makeshift stage. Apparently fascinated by the sight of Cal warming up for a mere promo video shoot, Steve and the film crew had gathered in a circle around him, capturing sticks and feet and the glitter of hi-hats on camera.
Which meant that Michael and Jamie were off the hook for the time being. In seconds, Jamie had grabbed Michael’s hand and set off in the opposite direction. “Come on.”
“We’re on in a minute,” Michael pointed out, but he followed him to the dressing room anyway. Even a minute was worth it. Even a second was better than nothing.
The room was sunk in darkness, quiet and empty. As soon as they were inside, Jamie pushed him against the closing door and covered his mouth, taking all he possibly could before they had to make an appearance again. Michael’s heart battered at his ribs. Weak-kneed, he slid his arms around Jamie’s waist. It was becoming a habit, this. Quick fumbles in darkened rooms, ears alert to any footsteps.
The sound of drumming stopped, and they broke apart, panting. Jamie’s eyes gleamed in the darkness. “Fuck.”
“What?”
“We’ve got a problem.”
Jamie turned away and started pacing. Now that Michael got a proper look at him, he realised that his hair was slightly damp, as if from a light drizzle, and he had a kind of wild look about him. Michael glanced at the window. It was speckled with rain. “Have you been out?”
Jamie stopped pacing and whirled around to stare at him. “You followed us?”
Michael caught the confession in mid-air. “You and Sapphire.” He scowled. “I see.”
“No,” Jamie burst out. “I mean, yes, but… No, not like that.”
“Oh, there’s a ‘that’?” Michael sneered, bile rising in his throat. He mustn’t be jealous, he just mustn’t. But the newly-weds were still being too fucking convincing. He’d had a daily dose of their icky bliss for a week now, and even though Sapphire had just taken her things and headed back to London for her HQ duties with Patrick, she still cast her shadow over their lives.
“So. Any epiphanies?” Michael asked sarcastically. “Is the sex any good?”
“Michael!”
He knew he should apologise, but he wasn’t in the mood. He was supposed to bear everything. Jamie cuddling with Sapphire for the camera, Zoltan taking his place on the bass, all his efforts on the harpsichord wiped from the album.
It was as if he didn’t exist.
Jamie didn’t so much sit down as let his knees buckle. An opportune chair received his weight with a faint squeak. “I haven’t touched her.” Something passed over his face, as if he remembered something, and he looked away.
“But she touched you.” Michael knew it as soon as he said it. She had touched Jamie – for real. Not just for show. His chest seemed to implode.
“Just a kiss,” Jamie sighed. “But it was enough. I felt it.
